What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

The Conversation That Started It All

In John 3, a Pharisee named Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night — privately, perhaps afraid to be seen. He opens with a compliment. Jesus cuts straight to the heart: "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again."

Nicodemus responds with the same question many people ask today: "How can someone be born when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!"

He's thinking physically. Jesus is talking about something else entirely.

Two Births, Two Natures

Jesus clarifies: "Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit." (John 3:6). Physical birth gives you a human nature. Spiritual birth gives you a new nature — one created by the Holy Spirit, capable of knowing and relating to God in a way the unregenerate person cannot.

This is not reformation — improving the old nature. It is regeneration — receiving a new one. Paul describes it in 2 Corinthians 5:17: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here." The language is not gradual improvement. It is new creation.

What Causes the New Birth?

The new birth is a work of the Holy Spirit, received through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not earned, not achieved through religious effort, and not the result of being raised in a Christian home. You can grow up in church your whole life and not be born again. You can be baptised as an infant and not be born again. The new birth is a personal, spiritual transformation that the Spirit of God works in response to genuine faith.

John 1:12–13 describes it: "To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God."

What Changes When You Are Born Again?

The new birth is not just a legal status change — it produces real transformation:

• New desires. The things you once loved, you begin to find hollow. The things you once had no interest in — prayer, Scripture, worship, community — begin to have a pull.
• New capacity. 1 Corinthians 2:14 says the natural person "does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them." After regeneration, Scripture opens up in a new way.
• New identity. You become a child of God — not in a metaphorical sense, but in a real, relational, eternal sense.
• New direction. Not perfection — but direction. The overall movement of your life turns toward God rather than away from him.

How Do I Know If I've Been Born Again?

1 John was written precisely to answer this question. John gives several markers:

• You believe that Jesus is the Christ (1 John 5:1)
• You love other believers (1 John 3:14)
• You have a sensitivity to sin — you don't keep sinning without grief (1 John 3:9)
• You have the Spirit's witness within you (1 John 4:13)

These are not a checklist to pass. They are signs of life — the way a doctor looks for vital signs, not to create them, but to recognise that they are already there.

What If I'm Not Sure?

If you're reading this and unsure whether you've been born again — the very fact that you're asking is significant. An indifferent heart doesn't ask. If you want to receive new life in Christ, the path is simple and has not changed in two thousand years: repent and believe. Turn from sin and self-reliance, and trust in Jesus Christ — his death for your sin, his resurrection as your hope. Ask God to make you new. He does not turn away that request.
